Looking for the most spectacular view in Southern Japan? Mount Sarakura (622m) in Kitakyushu City offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama that has been officially designated as one of the “New Three Major Night Views of Japan.” Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or on a romantic getaway, here is everything you need to know about visiting this iconic peak.
1. Highlights: What to See
- The 10-Billion-Dollar Night View: Unlike the quiet mountain views elsewhere, Sarakura overlooks a vibrant industrial city. You’ll see the glittering lights of Dokai Bay, the majestic Wakato Bridge, and the sprawling factories that built modern Japan.
- The Cable Car & Slope Car Journey: The ascent is part of the fun! Take one of the longest cable cars in Western Japan, then switch to the glass-sided “Slope Car” to reach the summit while watching the city shrink below you.
- Tenku Dome (Lover’s Sanctuary): A popular photo spot at the summit featuring a heart-shaped LED monument. It’s a designated “Lover’s Sanctuary,” perfect for couples.
- Seasonal Beauty: Walk along the Shikisai Road near the station to find hydrangeas in early summer or fiery maples in autumn.

2. The Best Time to Visit
To experience the full magic, aim for the “Magic Hour”—the window just before and after sunset.
| Season | Sunset Approx. | Recommended Arrival Time |
| Spring / Autumn | 18:30 – 19:00 | 18:00 |
| Summer | 19:30 – 20:00 | 19:00 |
| Winter | 17:30 – 18:00 | 17:00 |
Pro Tip: In winter, the air is much clearer, making the city lights sparkle even more intensely. However, it gets very cold at the summit, so bring a heavy jacket!
3. Access: How to Get There
