If you’ve been scrolling through social media looking for cute animal content in Japan, you’ve likely come across Punch-kun. This young Japanese Macaque at the Ichikawa City Zoo (near Tokyo) became a global sensation for his heart-melting habit of carrying a stuffed orangutan everywhere he went.
However, if you’re planning a visit soon, there are some exciting new updates you should know about his journey!
1. Growing Up: The “Plushie Graduation”
For a long time, Punch-kun’s orange plushie was his security blanket—a surrogate mother he clung to after being hand-raised by keepers. But recently, visitors have noticed something different: Punch-kun is spending more and more time without his toy.
He is officially “graduating” from his plushie! This is a wonderful sign of his emotional growth and independence. While we might miss the sight of him clutching his toy while climbing, seeing him interact with the world with “empty hands” shows he is becoming a confident, mature monkey.

2. A Real-Life “Where’s Waldo?” Challenge
Because Punch-kun no longer carries his bright orange trademark 24/7, finding him in the “Monkey Mountain” (Saru-yama) enclosure has become a fun challenge for tourists.
He has blended in so perfectly with the rest of the troop that it’s now a game of “Where’s Waldo?”.
- Pro-Tip: Look for the monkey that is slightly smaller than the adults but moving with high energy! If you get stuck, just look at where the local fans with the professional cameras are pointing—they never lose sight of him!
3. Still the Star of the Show
Despite his new “minimalist” lifestyle, Punch-kun’s popularity hasn’t faded at all. The zoo continues to see a steady stream of international travelers who make the trip from central Tokyo to witness his progress.
The atmosphere at the enclosure is always buzzing with excitement. It’s a heartwarming experience to see travelers from all over the world cheering for his successful socialization with the other monkeys.
