A Brief History
Goryokaku (五稜郭), located in Hakodate, Hokkaido, is Japan’s first Western-style fortress. It was completed in 1864 during the late Edo period, designed by Takeda Ayasaburō under the order of the Tokugawa shogunate. Its purpose was to protect Hakodate, an important port city, from foreign powers as Japan was opening up to the world.
Goryokaku is also historically significant as the site of the Battle of Hakodate (1869), the last major conflict of the Boshin War, where the shogunate’s forces made their final stand against the new Meiji government.
Why a Star Shape?
Unlike traditional Japanese castles, Goryokaku was modeled after European star forts. The five-pointed star design allowed defenders to cover all angles with cannons, eliminating blind spots and making it difficult for enemies to approach. Today, its elegant star-shaped layout is best appreciated from above.
