AdmiHidden in the tranquil countryside of Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, the Adachi Museum of Art is home to one of Japan’s most breathtaking gardens. Spanning over 165,000 square meters, this vast Japanese garden surrounds the museum like a painting come to life — a masterpiece that changes with each season.
In fact, it has been ranked the No.1 Japanese garden for 22 consecutive years by the U.S.-based Journal of Japanese Gardening, praised for its perfect balance of nature, art, and architecture.
A Living Painting — “Ichigo Ichie” in Every View
At Adachi Museum of Art, the garden itself is a living masterpiece, embodying the spirit of ichigo ichie — “a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.”
Every moment, every angle reveals a different expression of beauty. As autumn arrives, the garden glows in shades of crimson and gold, with maples and dōdantsutsuji shrubs reflecting beautifully against white gravel and distant mountains. The harmony between the man-made landscape and the natural backdrop — known as shakkei (“borrowed scenery”) — makes this garden a true living artwork.

The “Autumn Leaves” Masterpiece by Taikan Yokoyama
Inside the museum, you’ll find an exceptional collection of modern and contemporary Japanese paintings and ceramics, totaling around 2,000 works.
Among them, the museum’s most treasured pieces are by Taikan Yokoyama, one of Japan’s most celebrated painters. His stunning folding screen “Autumn Leaves (Kōyō)” — often regarded as one of his finest works — is on display only during the fall season, from August 31 to November 30, 2025.
The vivid reds and golds of Yokoyama’s painting seem to echo the colors of the garden outside, blurring the line between art and nature.

The peak season for autumn foliage at the Adachi Museum of Art is from mid-November to early December.
