Born in the scorching July of 2024, Punch-kun’s mother was sadly unable to care for him due to heat exhaustion. To save his life, zookeepers had to step in and raise him by hand.
Baby monkeys have a natural “clinging instinct”—they need to hold onto their mother’s fur 24/7 to feel safe and develop properly. To fulfill this need, keepers gave him a stuffed IKEA orangutan. For baby Punch, this wasn’t a toy; it was his surrogate mother and his security blanket.

What makes Punch-kun truly remarkable is his successful “debut” into the monkey community. Usually, monkeys raised by humans struggle to socialize, but Punch-kun joined the “Monkey Mountain” (Saru-yama) enclosure with his plushie tucked firmly under his arm.
