If you are visiting Tokyo between late March and early May, there is one iconic sight you absolutely cannot miss. Right beneath the crimson steel of Tokyo Tower, a vibrant school of 333 colorful fish “swims” through the air.
This is the Koinobori (Carp Streamer) Festival, a beloved spring tradition that perfectly blends Japanese folklore with the city’s modern skyline.
🏮 What is “Koinobori”?

Koinobori are wind socks shaped like carp. They are displayed to celebrate Children’s Day (May 5th).
In Japanese culture, the carp is a symbol of strength, courage, and success. This stems from a legend that a carp that swims upstream and leaps over a waterfall transforms into a powerful dragon. By flying these streamers, families pray for their children to grow up healthy and strong.
🗓️ Event Schedule
The event is held annually to coincide with the spring season and the “Golden Week” holidays.
- Period: Late March to early May (Ends approx. May 6th)
- Location: Tokyo Tower 1st Floor, Main Entrance (Outdoor)
- Scale: Exactly 333 streamers, matching Tokyo Tower’s height of 333 meters!
✨ Why You Should Visit

- The Perfect Photo Op: The contrast between the bright blue sky, the bold orange-red tower, and the multicolored fish is breathtaking. It is arguably the most “Instagrammable” spot in Tokyo during spring.
- Night Illumination: After sunset, the streamers are lit up, creating a magical and poetic atmosphere that differs completely from the daytime view.
- A Touch of Tradition: It’s a rare chance to see a massive-scale traditional display right in the heart of the metropolis.
🔍 Hidden Challenge: Find the “Sanma-nobori”!
Among the 333 carp, there is one lone impostor hiding in plain sight.
Instead of a carp, look for the “Sanma-nobori” (Pacific Saury streamer)! This special streamer is about 6 meters long and was created as a symbol of friendship and support for Ofunato City in Iwate Prefecture (famous for its saury fishing) following the 2011 earthquake.
- Pro Tip: Look for the fish that is much slimmer and more silver than the rounded, colorful carp!
Visitor Tip: > Admission to the ground area to see the Koinobori is free! After taking your photos, we recommend heading up to the Main Deck to look down at the “swimming” fish from 150 meters above for a unique perspective.
Enjoy the breeze and happy hunting for the silver saury! 🐟✨ence.
If you’re traveling in Japan during spring, this festival is definitely worth visiting.
