Discover the “Temple of Flowers” in Uji, Kyoto
If you are visiting Kyoto this June, there is one place that looks like a scene straight out of a fairy tale: Mimuroto-ji Temple (三室戸寺).
Known affectionately as the “Temple of Flowers,” Mimuroto-ji hosts one of Japan’s most spectacular seasonal displays. Nestled in the misty hills of Uji, the temple grounds transform into a sea of blue, purple, and pink. With over 20,000 hydrangea plants spanning 50 different varieties, it is an unforgettable sight that captures the essence of the Japanese rainy season (Tsuyu).

✨ Highlights of Mimuroto-ji
- A Sea of 20,000 BloomsThe hydrangea garden is set within a lush cedar forest. The contrast between the towering green trees and the vibrant, colorful blossoms creates a mystical atmosphere perfect for photography.
- Search for the “Heart-Shaped” HydrangeaAmong the thousands of flowers, a few naturally grow into the shape of a heart. Legend says that if you find one, you will find true love or improve your existing relationship!
- Unique Good Luck StatuesBeyond the flowers, the temple is home to unique stone guardians. Don’t forget to touch the “Bull of Fortune” (stroke the stone ball in its mouth for success) or the “Ugajin” (a snake with a human head) for wealth and happiness.

🗺️ The Perfect Day Trip: The “Uji Combo”
Mimuroto-ji is located in Uji, a charming city famous for world-class Matcha green tea. To make the most of your trip, we recommend pairing the temple with Uji’s most famous landmark:
- Byodoin Temple (World Heritage Site): Start your morning at Byodoin, the stunning “Phoenix Hall” featured on the back of the Japanese 10-yen coin. It is only a short distance from Mimuroto-ji.
- Matcha Experience: Between temples, stop by a local teahouse to try authentic Matcha tea or refreshing Matcha soba noodles.
