Hakone Autumn Travel: How to Visit Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Fields

When autumn arrives in Japan, few sights are as breathtaking as the golden waves of pampas grass swaying in the wind. Located in Hakone, the Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Fields (仙石原すすき草原) are one of the most famous autumn landscapes in the country. From late September to November, the fields turn into a shimmering sea of silver and gold, attracting visitors from all over the world.

The Beauty of Sengokuhara

The pampas grass fields stretch across the foothills of Hakone’s mountains, creating a wide-open view that contrasts beautifully with the blue autumn sky. As the wind blows, the tall grasses ripple like waves, and when the sun sets, the golden hues become even more magical. It’s a scene that perfectly captures the essence of Japanese autumn.

Best Time to Visit

The best season is late September through early November, when the pampas grass is at its peak. For the most stunning atmosphere:

  • Morning (around 9–11 am): Soft sunlight highlights the dew on the grasses.
  • Late afternoon (around 3–5 pm): The setting sun paints the fields in warm golden tones—ideal for photography.

Access by Public Transport

  • From Hakone-Yumoto Station: Take the Hakone Tozan Bus (T route, bound for Togendai) for about 30 minutes and get off at “Sengoku Kogen” bus stop. The fields are right there.
  • From Shinjuku Station (Tokyo): Take the Odakyu Highway Bus directly to “Sengoku Kogen” bus stop. The ride takes about 2.5 hours, and the fields are just steps away.

Access by Car

  • From central Tokyo: About 2 hours via the Tomei Expressway or Odawara-Atsugi Road.
  • From Hakone-Yumoto: Around 25–30 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Parking: A paid parking lot is available near the fields (around 500 yen per car). During peak autumn weekends, parking spaces may fill quickly, so arriving early in the morning is recommended.

Crowds and Visiting Tips

  • Weekends and holidays: The fields are extremely popular and can get crowded, especially in October.
  • Weekdays: Much quieter and easier to enjoy at your own pace.
  • Best strategy: Arrive early morning or late afternoon for fewer people and the best light.

Admission Fee

Good news—visiting the Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Fields is free of charge. You can walk along the main trail surrounded by pampas grass without any entrance fee.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It

Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Fields offer an authentic seasonal experience that connects you with Japanese nature and tradition. Unlike the bustling city views of Tokyo, this landscape is calm, expansive, and timeless. If you’re traveling in autumn, a visit here will give you unforgettable memories of Japan’s natural beauty.
