Nagasaki Lantern Festival, one of Nagasaki's biggest festivals

Nagasaki Lantern Festival was originally an event for the people of Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown to celebrate Chinese New Year.
Since its expansion in 1994, its name has become known throughout Japan as a major winter feature of Nagasaki.
During the 15-day period, about 15,000 lanterns displayed in the city and the objects at each venue will be fantastically colored and will deeply attract the hearts of visitors.

Event date

It will be held for about 2 weeks during the Chinese New Year.
Chinese New Year changes every year, so be sure to check the dates.

Various events such as lighting lanterns, parades, and China dance will be held in Nagasaki during this period.
The lighting time of the lantern is from 17:00 to 22:00.

Tips for enjoying the Lantern Festival

On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays during the Lantern Festival, Chinatown is so crowded.
Would you like to go through this crowd and enjoy a popular event? That is the key.

At Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown venue, after 20:30 when all the events are over, the audience will return home at once.
Therefore, it is recommended to see the lantern objects at “Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown” after 20:30.
However, if you want to eat and eat gourmet food in Chinatown, it’s better to arrive early because there are many shops that close at around 20:30.

Roads are crowded during the Lantern Festival, so walking or tram is recommended!
The last train is around 23:00.
