Big changes have come to climbing Mt. Fuji in 2025! If you’re planning to summit Japan’s most iconic mountain, it’s essential to understand the new rules, registration system, and safety precautions before you go. Here’s everything you need to know for a safe and unforgettable climb.

🆕 What’s New in 2025?

Starting in July 2025, all climbers must follow new regulations to protect Mt. Fuji’s natural environment and improve safety:

  • Climbing Fee Required: A ¥4,000 fee per person, per climb, is mandatory for all routes.
  • Nighttime Restrictions: Entry from 2:00 PM to 3:00 AM is only allowed for those with mountain hut reservations.
  • Online Registration System: All climbers must pre-register online (available from April 2025). Note: This is not a reservation for a mountain hut. You must book your hut separately.

🚫 Avoid “Bullet Climbing”

Climbing Mt. Fuji without resting in a hut — known as “bullet climbing” — is strongly discouraged. It increases risks like altitude sickness and injury.

If you are planning a one-day climb, make sure:

  • You are physically fit and experienced
  • You allow enough time to descend before your return transportation
  • You avoid late starts or climbing without proper gear

Avoid Crowds

Mt. Fuji attracts thousands of climbers, especially on weekends and during Obon holidays (mid-August). Congestion near the summit is common.
To enhance your experience:

  • Start early
  • Choose weekdays
  • Avoid peak travel periods

Prepare Properly

Before your climb:

  • Check the weather forecast
  • Bring proper equipment: headlamp, warm clothing, gloves, rain gear, water, snacks, etc.
  • Reserve your mountain hut if staying overnight
